* "Automata" (Weird Tales, September 1929). The triumph of the machine, told in three episodes. In the present or near future, Dr. Tilwin, a noted scientist, addresses the British Association, announcing that the age of machines has come and that mankind is doomed. Machines are already superior to mankind in important respects. In the second episode, set at some point after the 20th century, machines are already omnipresent, handling matters to perfection. Procreation has almost stopped, and flesh-children are now rare. In the final episode, the possibly last survivor is performing a task that the machines cannot do for themselves — making drawings, a form of creativity. Since he does not finish his task properly, he will be executed by the machines, who are now the only form of "life" on earth.

  1. This is a great list. I've read a lot of these people and, taken together, they will unpack your head like a cheap suitcase caught in a cyclone. The only name I would suggest adding is Richard Alf, known mostly for his pastoral screed NO SKIN OFF OF MY MOUNTAIN, a work that makes ISLANDIA seem dystopian!
